Perfect Indian Food in an Elegant but Still Comfy Setting

Most of the world's spices come from India, and they certainly know how to compose dishes that combine them in harmoniously euphoric ways. Almost all of them are mouth-wateringly hot, which may alarm some American taste buds, but the Indians have wonderful ways of putting out the fire, like a cool Mango Lassi - a blend of the juicy fruit with creamy yogurt that is probably the original "fruit smoothie." After a sip of this dessert-menu item, you'll be ready to jump back into the hearth. After a sip of this dessert-menu item, you'll be ready to jump back into the hearth. The Connaught Place was my first introduction to Indian cooking, which certainly spoiled me! Other Indian restaurants may have spicier dishes (the eggplant curry at the Old Post Office Pavilion downtown will dissolve your digestive tract in a matter of minutes, for instance) but none are so perfectly prepared. Even the simple lentil crisps The Connaught Place serves have a complicated array of subtle flavors (and they're not without a bite, either). The restaurant is the perfect place to sit and talk with a friend or date. Its proximity to George Mason University (it's on the corner of University Drive, in fact) guarantees that it won't get too stuffy, though the service tendered by the black bow-tied waiters is astounding. I'm always a little impatient to tear into dinner as they ladle the first serving of dinner onto my plate, but the simple elegance of this ritual is incredibly romantic. As I vegetarian I'm ill-equipped to help you with the lavish array of carved cows, chopped chickens and shelled fish this restaurant offers, but I do know that if you order anything on the menu you will rarely be disappointed. Everything is served with buttery, long-grained basmati rice, lightly peppered with dill seeds. One of the best dishes offered on the vegetarian page of their menu is the Paneer Mahkti, a homemade cheese covered in a sweet tomato sauce. This dish is actually very mildly spiced, so if you have a friend or relation who can't stand anything spicier than a baked potato, have them order this - then steal some from their plate

The place to be

Let's put it this way. I've gone to the lunch buffet almost every week for the past 4 years. Let's put it this way. I've gone to the lunch buffet almost every week for the past 4 years.
