ReviewsA Little Taste of Heaven This is a true neighborhood hang-out in the Del Ray area of Alexandria. The owner has gone to great lengths to make the atmosphere open and home-like for all who enter. It's almost like a coffee shop for custard (a heavier relative of ice cream). There is a definition of custard, and what goes into it, on the wall as you enter, as well as other passages and quotes the owner adores. The jukebox uses old 45 rpm records, all with "dream" somewhere in the title. Odds are, there will be an unfinished puzzle or game of Scrabble on one of the picnic benches for you to get in on. As the owner is originally from Wisconsin, as am I, she holds all types of parties, ranging from sheephead games to Brat Night to Founder's Day (for WI). All the cookies and bakery are made fresh and by hand. The ginger cookies are our personal favorite! She uses real grated ginger! There are even "Puppy Pops" for the neighborhood dogs. However, the prize attraction here is the custard. Don't come here looking for a Baskin Robbins counter - The Dreamery only has two flavors at a time - vanilla and the "Flavor of the Day". (Mexican Chocolate is a personal favorite.) These flavors change every two days, but there is usually a take-home calendar that lists the flavors for the current/upcoming month. I usually just get a cup or cone, which is a good portion for the quality of the custard. There are also a large quantity of sundaes available, which are larger portions. In terms of cost, you will pay a little more here than at the ice cream store down the street, but the experience of the shop and the taste of the custard are well worth the cost. They don't take credit cards, so make sure you have cash on hand. I think they take checks, but don't remember if the check needs to be local or not. The service is always friendly and swift. They are always concerned that they have done their best for you. The Dreamery is usually closed on Tuesdays. Food Rating [10/10] Service Rating [8/10] Ambiance Rating [8/10]
