Wonderful!

Granny's is a great place to eat to take in the atmosphere of Appalacia. Granny's is a great place to eat to take in the atmosphere of Appalacia.

Gone Down Hill

I remember about 3 years ago the staff at Granny's Chicken Palace was topnotch. The courtesy host was a small guy who had this attitude like a general and sat people with blazing speed. Although he was really really fast he was really really good and our wait was short. Now there are these two little girls who don't seem to know what they are doing so the line never seems to move. The waitstaff used to be courtious and friendly but now they just seem to want to get us in and get us out. I asked for a refill 4 times and never got it. Which reminds me, they used to have really compitant and swift buspeople who were always quick to assist anyone who needed it. Now there are a couple of little boys who couldn't be more than 12 or 14. Are their no child labor laws in North Carolina? Also, what happened to the food? The portions used to be big and the food was good so you were happy to have the large portions. Now the chicken tastes and looks as if it was made a week before and the sides are cold and rubbery like they've been sitting around. Also everything on the menu is over $1 more expensive than it was a year ago. I don't expect to see this establishment around a whole lot longer with food and service like I had tonight. Fried Chicken that will want to make you slap your mama!

Grannys is just about as mountain as you can get! It is located in an old log cabin with wonderfully appropriate decorating and everywhere you look there are tables! The dining hall is huge and there is still always a line waiting get in! The menu is simple: fried chicken, fried trout and maybe one other item depending on the day. It is served 'family style' with all the food placed in bowls on the table for each person to get what they want. With each meal comes green beans, cole slaw and an amazing special recipe corn 'fritter'. WOW! You will definitely want to ask for more of these and then sneak some in your purse to take with you, too. The service is very fast (with so little on the menu it would have to be), but not too friendly or attentive. Also, they do not seem to like for you to ask for 'seconds' of the items, but do it any way, mostly for the corn fritters. After your meal relax on the wonderful front porch in one of the dozen or so rocking chairs and look at the surrounding mountains. You will love Granny's, and you will get a true slice of Western North Carolina at the same time. Grannys is just about as mountain as you can get! A Great Place for Dinner

This is southern comfort food at its finest. Every time we go to North Carolina, we make sure that we spend a night near Lake Junaluska just so we can eat dinner at Granny's. The people are friendly, the service is great, and the food is fantastic. This is southern comfort food at its finest.
