Best Food Around

(My spouse's family distantly related to owner, who is well known since he used to cook for Hungarian Club). (My spouse's family distantly related to owner, who is well known since he used to cook for Hungarian Club). Best homecooking downriver. Decorated with Hungarian arts and crafts, has booths and tables. Bread basket with sweet butter, fine coffee. Generous servings of paprikas, goulash, stuffed cabbage. Homestyle chicken soup daily, yummy cream of mushroom on Thursday. Groups of six or more can get family style service (ask waitress, not on menu). He makes his desserts: walnut buttercream torte, and kremisch (pastry filled with a whipped cream custard) etc. The back room always filled with showers and parties. Sometimes you hear gypsy music back there. Only weakness: instant mashed potatoes, and, ladies room has cloth towel machine you yank and pull out scary mystery cloth that you hope wasn't cranked in by the last user.

did I go into the wrong restaurant?

I stopped by on Saturday afternoon, 2-16-2002 on the recommendation of earlier reviews. I ordered the chicken paprikas dinner. The chicken was a little chewy, like it had been made yesterday? The paprikas sauce taste like it came out of a can, I couldn't feel the taste of the fresh sour cream flavor leaping at me. Nor did the paprika spice reach out and grab my taste buds, like it should have. The lettuce on my salad was a little wilted, although the tomato slice and the green pepper was alright. And my tea? well it ran down the side of the teapot onto the table, just like it does in every other restaurant. A five star superb restaurant? - I think not. Previous reviewers are overly generous with their rating. this is a 3 star restaurant. I stopped by on Saturday afternoon, 2-16-2002 on the recommendation of earlier reviews. Superb

Steve and Darlene Szatmari have done just what they needed to do to create a great restaurant - in keeping with Steve's traditions - for the rest of us to enjoy. Steve studied culinary arts in his native Budapesh and then worked here in such fine places as the Hyatt Regency and the Hungarian Club, with Darlene joining him. (We learned this from the news clipping on the wall, although Steve, himself, did drop by our table to say hello and to answer all our questions.) The two, Darlene and Steve, have had just the right culinary instincts and business acumen to have created a lasting first rate ethnic restaurant that Detroit can be proud of. We just ate there tonight (2/1/03) for the first time and, although our first visit was expensive, we will go back. Our family had Chicken Paprikas, Hungarian Goulash, Stuffed Cabbage, Potato Noodles, Veal crepe, cucumber salad, sausage and cheese appetizer, and two desserts - apricot crepes and rum cake - and other accompaniments. The Hungarian among us said his food was great and very authentic. It made him happy. So much so that we bought extra Kolbasz and cheese to bring home with us for his traditional Hungarian breakfasts, as long as it lasts. The restaurant atmosphere was very pleasant, although a bit noisy on this crowded night. We knew right away from the crowded parking lot that this was going to be a hit, and it was. The authentic Hungarian decorations were also an enjoyable part of the experience and brought our memories back to our visit to Budapest this summer. We could even almost see our two-week residence near the Parliament across the river from the Fisherman's Bastion in the large painting on the wall. The service was also excellent, and we fairly tested our waitress with a zillion questions and requests. The busboy was even very courteous and responsive to our needs. We have tested two other Transylvanian restaurants in the area and this is by far head and shoulders over the others, although they were by no means bad.

Disgusted

I was not impressed what-so-ever. I walked in to see food all over the floor. The atmosphere smells like a funeral home. The wait staff is rude. The chicken paprikas was rather chewy and I was a little disgusted that the meat is left on the bones. My wife got the stuffed cabbage, and the meat inside was pink and cold. I saw the owner cussing at his employees. You can tell he has an ego. I was not impressed what-so-ever. I walked in to see food all over the floor. The atmosphere smells like a funeral home.
