Books are only for looks at sports-minded Library

The Lowdown: Going to the library takes on an entirely new meaning at this coyly named restaurant and sports bar, a Novi fixture for more than six years. Hundreds of books line the place, but they're no match for the 27 television screens that co-owner Alan Barnett swears are visible from any seat. Alan and his brother Robert Barnett took a former Shields Pizzeria and made it a family-friendly restaurant during the day and, after 9 p.m., a bar welcoming those 21 and older. A popular spot to catch the game with friends on any night, it also hosts live local music Thursdays through Saturdays -- usually without a cover. Atmosphere: It depends on what you're here for. If you go for the band, the main room is lined with cocktail tables and chairs, putting you within feet of the performers. Conversations and eating are best conducted farther away, in little nooks created by cleverly placed partitions. There's also a pair of pool tables and a handful of video games. Like any sports bar, the Library does its most brisk business on big game nights. If members of the busy wait staff bump into you, it's not that they're rude. Like you, they're trying to negotiate the Library's labyrinth of high tables and cozy booths in the back room. Crowd: Young, sports-minded, with a surprisingly even mix of men and women. An occasional Red Wing has been known to hang out here because some players live nearby. Decor: Warm wood floors and tables add to the homey feeling, though the actual decoration is pretty generic. Yes, there is an occasional framed Lions photograph or a Woody Allen quote, but the walls are mostly lined with modern, mirrored promotional beer signs. Bibliophiles will be disappointed by the Library's bland display of books -- mostly volumes of Reader's Digest Condensed and Encyclopedia Britannicas, circa 1979. Dress: Highly casual. Jeans and jerseys are welcome. Want someplace to go after the builder's show at the Novi Expo Center down the street? You look just fine. Music: Local acts fill the bill at the Library, mostly playing cover tunes. Last Saturday saw veteran bar band the Look playing a mix of Zeppelin, Doors, Rolling Stones and Monkees. Friday and Saturday this weekend, look for Raymond's Last Day, a modern-rock trio that reportedly strips to its boxer shorts during the set and encourages audience to do the same. Tuesday nights are devoted to karaoke. Food and drink: The Barnetts offer some nice additions to the usual pub grub, including herb-stuffed breast of chicken ($8.50) and linguine in white clam sauce ($7.55), along with fancy salads in the $5-$7 range. Best yet, they keep the kitchen open until 1 a.m. They also pride themselves on serving beer in the proper glasses -- tall and thin for the Widmer Hefeweizen, a slightly curved pint for some of the Irish ales. The bottled beer is truly on ice, and when you order a pitcher, you'll not only get a full 60 ounces, but the accompanying glasses will be full as well. Pick-up potential: It's a sports bar, not a meat market, but hookups occur. Alan Barnett observes: "We've got guys who met their wives here. Now they come back with their families for dinner." Hours: 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. Cover: Occasional cover, depending on the band. Usually no more than $2. Parking: Expect plenty of parking in front, though it can get cramped on big game nights.

Great place to watch a Red Wings game; the place is packed with fans, especially during the playoffs. Good live music on weekends. Great place to watch a Red Wings game; the place is packed with fans, especially during the playoffs. Good live music on weekends.

Holy Shizit!!!

The library pub serves the most ultimate appetizer. It goes great with any type of drink. If you end up there try the Mozzarella Cheese Bread it's fizucking phenomenal. This comes from some one who lives in Naples FL. There are more restaurants here than dirty drawers. I know good food and "The Pub" has it. The library pub serves the most ultimate appetizer. Holy Cow have you tried the nachoes? They are the best in Novi. Great place to watch the Wings. Great place to drink 19 pints, and root for the underdogs. I met 4 Red Wings last time.
