Reviews Waited 1h 45min for a table on a Saturday. Service was awful. Chicken was raw in the middle. Waited 1h 45min for a table on a Saturday. Service was awful. Chicken was raw in the middle. First of all the funny thing about going to this restaurant is that I was going to be writing a review on it any way for a class I’m taking. Any way I went on a Sunday afternoon with some friends after church got out. This place is packed by the way on Sunday afternoon. So we wait to be seated over twenty minutes, which isn’t bad really. It did give us time to look the place over and it really is a great atmosphere. First off is of course the fact that it’s an old church so there is stained glass and beautiful woodworking about. Other interesting items were the pew seating where some had been converted to booths and others to regular seating. There are lots of other cool eye catching things every where like a vintage room for sitting including cushioned chairs from the nineteen twenties and a seemingly misplaced disco ball. An old bingo light up board hangs on the far wall as you stand there waiting for your table. They actually use it with the bar on Saturday nights, games are free. When we actually were seated we learned on Sunday afternoon they only serve breakfast which I found a little odd but they do open up at night to serve dinner. I ordered something they call the plowman's plate. A lunch item featured on the breakfast menu. I ordered a coke to go with, as I am not 21 yet. When I got my drink it tasted funny and I asked if I could get a new one I was then informed by our waitress that’s the way it should taste all there fountain drinks taste funny. She offered a draft root beer instead I accepted. The root beer was good it had a sort of velvety texture to it. While we sat and waited for our food I happened to notice the bar (for all you drinkers out there) had around 20 beers on tap and about 40 bottles to choose from so you're not short on choice domestic or imported on a Saturday night. After waiting for our food for about an hour we were informed they lost our ticket and were making our food now. The manager told us that they would take care our drinks for us though, three-dollar losses on their part woo hoo! During the course of our time being there service was shoddy at best and the food was not that impressive. Nine fifty for a bowl of deli turkey, vegetables and a hunk of cheese for me, they also forgot to give me part of my order. My companions said there food was not too impressive either. At any rate this place is not short on charm of the atmoshpere but does lack as far as service and overall food quality. I don’t think I’m going back. I recently moved back to Michigan and remembered visiting the "U" nion and thought to see how things have changed. Not much, thankfully. This is not fine dining...but then again only a fool would think that. The food is exceptional and the beer selection is outstanding. The difference was most of the bartenders and servers are still there. After 3 years that said a lot. Amy (bartender) is a sweetheart and took excellent care of us. I'll be back soon! Not only is the atmosphere great, the options for entertainment are excellent. If you're in for a quiet dinner in downtown, sit on the patio; if you're in for a couple drinks with some friends, sit at the bar; if you're on a casual date, sit at one of the many pews! The food is always excellent, and service is great. Most of the kids, and adults, that work there eat there, so they know what to offer if you ask. The fountain drinks only taste weird every once in a while, so don't let that scare you. The Union is the place to relax in Downtown Clarkston. However, some appetizers take longer to cook then the meals, so be sure to ask for an appetizer right away and then look for a main course. Although the menu is rather small, all of the choices are excellent. Now the prices aren't small, I can gaurantee that, as a single (1/2) serving of macaroni and cheese is $5. But, hey! Isn't that a fair price for great food? My, only complaint, the potatoes.... Eat them, you'll see what I mean... Food Rating [8/10]
