Upscale in Ann Arbor

I once heard this restaurant aptly described as "caviar, at caviar prices". You get excellent food, and you pay for it. I once heard this restaurant aptly described as "caviar, at caviar prices". You get excellent food, and you pay for it. There are a few upscale steakhouses in Michigan, notably Ruth's Chris, The Capital Grille, and the Chop House. Ruth's Chris is the place to go if you like your steaks broiled in butter, and want the best chance of seeing a local sports figure. The Capital Grille has dry aged steaks, private wine lockers, and outstanding desserts. But in my opinion, the wet aged steaks at the Chop House stand head and shoulders above even that elite competition. Like its brethren, the Chop House offers large side dishes - most of which will easily serve two people. Their potatoes are excellent, so I encourage diners to order more than one variety (but typically not more than one order for every two people in the party). Dinners start with an assortment of breads from Zingermans, as well as gourmet crackers. Although a bit large for two people, their cold seafood platter is an excellent appetizer for a group. I have tried most of their appetizers, and have liked them all. The cold seafood may seem a bit pricey, but they provide an impressive amount of seafood for that price. I have yet to have a steak I did not like, or which was not cooked precisely as ordered. The steaks portions are all large - and I have surprised myself with how much steak I can actually consume in one sitting. Most people manage to eat their entire steak, even if they think it is far too huge - because it is simply that good. For those who don't want beef, they also offer lamb, or for a greater departure they offer a ahi tuna steak (incredibly lean, sushi quality tuna). But fundamentally this is a steak house, and you are best served by having steak. This is also a dining experience. Expect to enjoy the ambience and to eat your dinner over a period of hours. I am sure they can cater to people who want to 'eat and run', but that's not what this restaurant is about. It is meant to be an experience in fine dining. After dinner, you can go "next door" to La Dolce Vita, and enjoy dessert. (You don't have to go outside - as you enter the Chop House, if you veer left you enter La Dolce Vita. This is a dessert and aperatif restaurant, shared with Gratzi, the Italian restaurant located next door. They have a non-smoking area upstairs, and a cigar lounge downstairs. I recommend the cigar lounge, particularly for larger groups. The lounge does have a cigar smell, but it is well ventilated for any active smoking, and is much more comfortable and intimate than the upstairs seating area. (If you are wary of smoke, go downstairs and check it out before you decide where to sit. I *despise* cigarette smoke, but I have no problem with the lounge.) If you drink wine with dinner, you should plan on spending $50-$60/person (including tip), plus about $8/person if you stay for dessert. If that gives you "sticker shock", trick your inlaws into taking you there for your spouse's birthday. ;-)

Absolutely the Best in AnnArbor.. or MI for that matter!

During my three day stay in Ann Arbor, I chose to spend two of my evenings there at The Chop House. Incredible service combined with superb cuisine. The cold seafood appetizer is incredible as well as any steak that you would order off the menu. I strongly recommend staying for dessert as well. They have an incredible pecan pie, among other great desserts! Enjoy sitting at the bar having great cocktails from the very personable bartenders and if you are lucky enough to befriend Martin, you will thank your lucky stars!!!
