Reviews

This review is based on three visits to Nichi Bei Kai. This review is based on three visits to Nichi Bei Kai. There are two parts of Nichi Bei Kai: the steakhouse part and the sushi bar part. The dimly-lit steakhouse part has a number of square tables surrounding cooktops where the chef prepares the meal. The staff seats multiple parties at one large table (for efficient use of the chef's time), which can be good or bad, depending on whether you want to meet new people or to have a private conversation. The chef's preparation of the meal is the entertainment; it often includes pyrotechnic tricks. This would be great for families with kids. The steak itself is good, as are the tempura dishes. Dinners are served with Japanese onion soup (distinctive and tasty) and a salad (boring except for the sesame-spiked dressing). Two rooms off of the steakhouse area appear to be for private parties. These rooms are separated by fusuma and contain traditional low tables along with traditional Japanese decor. The brightly-lit sushi bar area is in the expected format, with a few tables and a long bar behind which ingredients are displayed and the sushi is prepared. My experience with their sushi has been great; it has been fresh and flavorful, and there's a large selection. My favorite is the Philadelphia Maki Roll. The variety platters are good for sharing and trying new things. Nichi Bei Kai offers ice cream in green tea or red bean flavors, as well as other items, for dessert. I love the green tea ice cream. I like the serene ambiance, with koi swimming in a pond at the front of the restaurant.
