ReviewsOverpriced and Audacious Residents of Lexington waited for almost a year for the arrival of this new well-dressed eatery at the heart of town. A lot of promise in this area, full of OK restaurants and several not so OK, but all that offer nothing new. Residents of Lexington waited for almost a year for the arrival of this new well-dressed eatery at the heart of town. A lot of promise in this area, full of OK restaurants and several not so OK, but all that offer nothing new. Copa Cafe wants to hold that premise - a refreshing selection of interesting foods like Barbecued Duck Lasagna and Fish pie. It fails miserably. To begin with, the service is annoying, with the waiters futzing around with techno-doohikies that take them more time to handle than pen and paper. Food is extremely expensive - you order a supposedly main course, and the waiter warns you - 'well, you should order more' and indeed he is right: the portions should be called samplers at best. Bite size is the best term. The price though, packs a punch of a 5 lbs. rib-eye steak. So yeah, the place looks nice, and the waiters all seem like they would be interesting people, but instead of offering 95 different kinds of coffee, why not offer good food in price-worthy sizes. Some of the dishes were quite tasty and unique, while others were just ok. But overall, the food was fairly creative and enjoyable, (-and the drinks definitely were, too!) Service was always friendly, and attentive. A bit on the pricey side, but overall a nice dining experience. Good food, served tapas-style (with many small, shared dishes). The wait was not worth it. The small portions are too expensive and the hostess treated us as if we did not have enough $ to be eating there. Poor restaurant management and trying to be too high-end of an establishment. Time will tell if this place survives. It is a great place to people watch but I can do it for free just sitting on the benches out in front of the restaurant. The Copacafe tries to do too much - is it a gourmet cheese venue, a coffee house, a pastry cafe or a tapas bar? The dishes our group tried were tasty but very small. Not enough bang for the buck. A more traditional but very nice restaurant would suit the town better. We've been waiting for a more upscale dining experience in Lexington and unfortunately this is not it. The prices were good as long as you don't eat too much. But, we weren't even expecting food because we were under the impression that it was just a coffee place with some little pastries or something. So overall I would say that the Copa is pretty good. The waiter could have explained the menu since we were first time guests. I did get coffee to go at a good price and a few desserts. It's a bit pricy and they don't give you very big portions but the food is wonderful. I love the setting too. Very European. Unfortunately, that's about as far as I can go. The service (for dining in) is usually mediocre to poor, and the prices way too high. Having lived in Lexington for many years, I was delighted initially to see that a new restaurant was coming in, but after visiting a few times (yes I gave CC the benefit of the doubt), I think I will take my business to Dali's/Tapeos/Solera for Tapas, where they try to do only Spanish cusine. If the coffee shop were The problem with the Copacafe is quite simply that they are two establishments in one business. If the coffee shop were separate from the overpriced restaurant, then those who go for a cup of joe and some great beans to take home would no doubt get better service from less harried workers. The two different places together make for a less than acceptable experience overall Food Rating [4/10] Service Rating [4/10] Ambiance Rating [6/10] Hip World Cuisine, Lexington Centers First Bar, and Great Coffee Sure, the portions are on the small side -- you're not going to stagger out behind a swollen belly at the end of the meal. People used to oversized American portions will be surprised, perhaps pleasantly, that they have room to try more than one of the European/Asian dishes. Our server explained the restaurant's vision and the menu well. Coffee and tirimisu was some of the best I've ever had. And I'll be back to sit at the bar, watch the Sox and have a few beers, in a town that is usually dead by 10pm. This place has it all. If you want a nosh, order a hot or cold entree. If you want dinner, try the tasting menus. The food is fresh, well prepared and presented, and interesting. They will also offer "small plates" of a couple interesting nibbles between salad and main course. The Crab Cake was excellent, the size of a large hamburger, but very light and subtle in flavor with a jalepeno aioli. The Duck Lasagna was deep in flavor with compelling contrasts. The Baby Lamb Chops (two) were nice and rosy and nicely herbed. Nice selection (w/o being huge) of aperitifs, wines, ports, and dessert wines. The cheese course, which is a mix of American and European selections, is also well done. Service is excellent and unobtrusive. George Howell said now that things are operating smoother, new and interesting things will be happening. Can't wait. Apparently the opening day bugs have been worked out. I really don't mind to spend a little more money to enjoy myself in style! The selection of wine and coffee is outstanding, the desserts delicious, and the food perfect, because you can sample may different dishes without getting overly full! I loved this restaurant/cafe.
