ReviewsTheres a first time for everything I had never eaten authentic Vietnamese food before, and it's nothing like the "Chinese" food I'm used to. Dishes are full of unrecognizable vegetables, and trying to ask what they are doesn't seem to help. The food is very tasty, however, and the staff willing to explain more than once what you are eating. Many of the dishes come in a bowl, and are similiar to a stew, although the flavors are more distinct than in American cooking. Nothing I tried was too spicy to eat; the vegetables seem to be what create the distinctive taste. There are many Vietnamese restaurants in Des Moines, but I think this one is the best! Its very authentic and very affordable. You can order by the number if you're uncomfortable with pronouncing the names of dishes. The thing I love about Vietnamese food is how fresh and light it tastes. Many dishes come with fresh herbs and vegetables on the side that you can add to taste. They have an entire separate menu with vegetarian options which is also nice. All of the egg rolls and spring rolls (wrapped in steamed rice paper rather then fried) are great, both with meat and without. I highly recommend A Dong!
