Just a Touch of Class

I've been here twice, both times with my work group for quarterly recognition dinners. I've been here twice, both times with my work group for quarterly recognition dinners. The appetizers and entrees are good, but nothing to stand out in my memory (it's been a while.) I do remember that certain items on the trays of mixed appetizers were uneaten at both ends of the table. Desserts are good. This is part of a small chain of WWII airport-themed restaurants; based on the two I've been to (here and in College Park, Md.), I'd be comfortable taking a date to any of them.

This was my third trip to this restaurant and had enjoyed previous two trips. Love the decor and ambiance, however was disappointed with the food this time and discouraged by the prices as they seem to have risen. The meals did not stay warm; got the impression that entrees were premade and reheated in microwave because the meals seemed to appear quickly after ordering, but did not stay warm very long. Had previously enjoyed the cheddar mashed potatoes, but this time they were lumpy and very starchy in addition to not staying warm. Group enjoyed Reuben appetizer, but no one was overly excited with their entrees. One was disappointed with the wilted lettuce in her salad. I enjoyed the Beer Cheddar soup - different, but could also taste beer in the marinara sauce of my entree. We were a group of 7 and the waitress was very accommodating with our seating requests and was also very prompt in serving water continuously throughout the meal. The meal was a celebration of 2 birthdays and we were very surprised and enjoyed the rendition of "Happy Birthday" provided by the staff.

I used to dine at Air Transport Command fairly regularly-- at least 5 or 6 times per year. On most occasions we went for lunch, though occasionally we had dinner there. On most occasions we went for lunch, though occasionally we had dinner there. Until recently, I invariably enjoyed the food at the restaurant and the service was always outstanding. On most visits during the spring and summer, we would ask for a seat by the long window toward the back so that we would could watch the small aircraft landing and taking off from the adjacent runway. Conversely, when the weather turned cold, we would try to sit near one of the cozy fireplaces. The decor is interesting and entertaining, to say the least. Unfortunately, what used to be a great place to eat, ATC is no longer on my personal favorites list. About two years ago something changed. I don't know if it was a change of management, ownership, chef or a combination of all three, but the resulting changes were less than subtle. The food prices took a steep jump, especially the dinner menu. While price is not everything for someone looking for a fine meal, one cannot help but notice when simultaneously prices go up and quality goes down. My last three visits to to Air Transport Command were not good experiences. While the wait staff and their service is still very good, the food lately has been served cold and sometimes the presentation is a bit off. On my most recent visit my appetizer was delivered promptly but arrived at our table cold. My fiance was dissapointed with her cheese-beer soup which arrived luke-warm with a film on the surface as if it had been sitting around for some time. This dish had previosuly been her favorite. The main course came out quickly-- a little too quickly, actually. We had both ordered Coq au Vin. It was served steaming hot, but the vegetables tasted cold which was odd. The chicken was not as tender as one would expect of this dish and the flavor wasn't right. It was somewhat bland-- like the broth and wine were not allowed time to reduce and concentrate, which normally gives Coq au vin its deep color and taste. Toward the end of the meal, we watched as another couple seated across from us, sent their food back to the kitchen for reasons unknown. We skipped dessert and haven't been back since.

Bar Patrons here are trouble

The crowd that patronizes the ATC is, shall we say, less than desirable. I was so dissappointed when I went there one evening. The crowd has changed so much, I didn't even feel safe there. Today I read in the News Journal that they are stabbing each other there. Two people are in the hospital recovering from stab wounds. Needless to say we will not be going back there as long as they have the same crowd. The crowd that patronizes the ATC is, shall we say, less than desirable.
