J Gilberts Wood-Fired Steaks

J. Gilberts main fare is their specialty steak, but also serve chicken dishes, fish, etc. Atmosphere is cozy, on the border between casual and dressy (though Ive seen all sorts there). Food is a little pricey, but not outrageous.

J. Gilberts Wood-Fired Steak:

I haven't had any dish there that I didn't like. Start with the homemade Maytag Blue Potato chips, covered in melted blue cheese. Have a salad, if you like, then go for the steak, marinated for weeks, then peppered and cooked over a wood fire. Best steak I've had! I've also tried chicken dishes there, with equal excellent results. Service is always prompt and friendly, even when the restaurant is packed! And it usually is, so reservations are highly recommended. The ambient noise sometimes gets a little loud, just because they can pack quite a number of people into their space. The prices can also be a little on the high side. But for the food and service... it's wort I haven't had any dish there that I didn't like. Some of the best Steak ever, and that doesnt even start it.

Wow, the only advice I can offer a person coming here? Bring your wallet, and a date. It's the perfect place for a date, though the average of $30/person all in all will set you back a bit. Wow, the only advice I can offer a person coming here? Bring your wallet, and a date. It's the perfect place for a date, though the average of $30/person all in all will set you back a bit. But you know what? It's all worth it. The ambiance is incredible, and the furniture reminds me of some of Frank Lloyd Wright's better Praire Houses. The service is impeccable, and the only true wait you'll encounter is in line, if you don't call in a reservation. On any Monday-Thursday reservations are easy to secure until three in the afternoon or so. On weekends? You best have called ahead during the week. Yes, it's costly, but it's worth it, people can respect a good thing when they see it, and J. Gilbert's is a great thing, as demonstrated by the nightly crowds. I'm about to take a date there, and if she weren't going to be dressed up, I'd be fully comfortable wearing pleated khakis & a button down shirt. If you've got the means to go, do so. It's worth the experience, even if only once in a lifetime. Though I'll wish you good luck if you're going to try only going once.

Good Food, Good Wine

Excellent place for a date. Impossible to go wrong with ANY selection on the menu. Excellent place for a date. Impossible to go wrong with ANY selection on the menu. Service is good and waitstaff is attentive, however when they present a bottle of RED wine they should be told to present only the cork. Whites can be presented with a splash. Red wine tastes like gasoline immediately after un-corking. With this minor adjustment the combination of fare and service is second-to-none.
