ReviewsEverything expected and more... Well, after what we'd read about Tour D'Argent and Le Grand Vefour, the reviews for Armand Au Palais Royal were middling. The restaurant, its service and its fare were anything but. Jean-Pierre Ferron himself was warm and welcoming to us, just a couple of 'nobody' Americans, as it were. He was as inviting as any of the most hospitable Europeans anywhere, and knew the menu like the back of his hand, which he rattled off (but not too fast) to us, detailing and expertly fielding questions along the way. We knew a bit of French cuisine, but he managed to help us through the more complex parts without being snooty or down-the-nose at all, and the food, well, exceptional, every course, and the beef comes highly recommended from myself; a somewhat picky beef fanatic, and the creme brulee was magnificent. This seemingly simple and highly popular dessert is so often too dense or overly sweet, but not there. The wine list too is exceptional. I might suggest a slightly broader Bordeaux selection, but otherwise very good indeed. An A+ experience and not one we are likely to forget. It was, probably, in the end the service and M. Ferron himself that made it so wonderful. It seemed as though he was genuinely pleased to see us, and that is becoming rarer in an age of celebrity chefs and self-indulgent menus. The restaurant itself is quite unassuming from the outside, and the inside is cozy, tasteful and quite fascinating, what with its history (once was the stable for the Palais!). The art on the walls was rather weird and perhaps even disturbing... but it gave us a hidden chuckle, so there you go. Good decor without being pretentious in the least. I was very impressed with the service (I even received a long distance phone call to Canada to confirm my reservation), the wonderful setting, and the incredible food. The food was memorable.
